Indian First: Identity, Appropriation and Reclamation features photographic works by Ho-Chunk artist, Tom Jones. The exhibition is represented by two bodies of work, I am Indian First and Artist Second and “Native” Commodity. Through the use of abstraction and documentation Jones’ work raises questions about identity and representation, providing a unique perspective on the commodification of Native cultures. His photographs encourage a thoughtful critique of cultural appropriation and point toward the long-term effects of this practice on Native people.
On-view: October 19th – January 26th, 2012.
